Of the many picturesque islands that Malaysia has to offer (think of Penang and Pangkor, for example) Langkawi has to be one of my favorites. With sunset cruises, mangrove tours and many Langkawi great tours to choose from, many consider it the ultimate tropical escape with its breathtaking beaches and surreal rainforests. But aside from that, Langkawi is just so much fun!

After landing at Langkawi airport, there are a bunch of activities that you can do here, from riding cable cars to relaxing in a spa, and frolicking on the beach. It also goes without saying that the cuisine is stellar so foodies will have a great time exploring, and there are a bunch of great bars in Langkawi.

Where to Stay in Langkawi

Please understand that Langkawi is a big island and deciding where to stay is as important as what type of hotel you choose.

In very simple terms, most of Langkawi’s eateries, attractions, and modern cafes are set on the southwestern side of the island in the popular Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah. Outside of these two areas, the island becomes more rural, restaurants cater to local Malay tastes, you’ll find close to zero options for international food, and there’s pretty much no party scene.

This said, Langkawi’s best 5 Star Hotels are located on other northern beaches, which in some cases (like The Datai, for example) are privatized and can’t be accessed by non-hotel guests.

For this reason, it’s useful to have your own set of wheels to get around. It’s easy enough to rent a scooter in advance (CLICK HERE) or if you don’t feel like driving, organize a charter car with a driver for the day.

Best Boutique Hotels in Langkawi

(image from Frangipani Langkawi Resort Facebook)

One of the standouts at Frangipani Langkawi Resort is the private beach and great facilities, including a saltwater lap pool and outdoor jacuzzis.

The resort is clean and classy with plenty of open space, which makes it nice to walk around. I also quite like the colors they use — a combination of muted red and off-whites that make it look beautiful. The rooms themselves are decorated in a similar way, and they’re quite spacious as well. They come with a ceiling fan, air-conditioning, and complimentary coffee and water.

I recommend spending a little more to book a villa to make the most of your stay at this resort.

What I liked

  • Peaceful and quiet
  • Beautiful views of the sea and greenery
  • Friendly and accommodating staff

What I didn’t like

  • The breakfast buffet is not as varied

Bon Ton is definitely one of the most unique Langkawi hotels (image © Kit Yeng Chan)

One of Langkawi’s most established boutique resorts, Bon Ton offers eight beautifully restored and upholstered wooden Malaysian homes, some 100-plus years old, set around a thin, exclusive swimming pool.

Today Bon Ton decided to come back stronger after the pandemic by following more in the steps of McMurtrie’s other Penang creations, the hip bar and bistro Chinahouse and Art Lane. That’s how Bon Ton became Bon Ton Locale: together with music, it focuses on art and fashion, with the general goal of unleashing tons of creativity all around the resort’s grounds as if it had transformed into a self-supporting, thriving artist village.

What I liked

  • Cozy rooms in single cottages with spacious bathrooms
  • Very friendly and attentive staff
  • Near Cenang Beach and other tourist attractions

What I didn’t like

  • The pool is not very large

If secluded resorts are more your thing, then La Pari Pari might be the place for you. It’s more intimate than other hotels and is located in the middle of the Pantai Tengah district, but enough inside from the main road as to be sheltered from the bars.

The hotel only has 12 rooms spread out around well-manicured gardens, which allows staff to pay closer attention to each of the guests. This resort has a clean, white, minimalistic look to it, which I quite like. It’s also nice having your own little unit a fair distance from other guests. The rooms themselves are spacious, as are the outdoor and shared areas.

What I liked

  • Cozy rooms with spacious bathrooms
  • Very friendly and attentive staff
  • Near Cenang Beach and other tourist attractions

What I didn’t like

  • The pool was quite small

(image from Kunang Kunang Heritage Villas Facebook)

A Malay word that means “fireflies,” Kunang Kunang is a place like no other. The villas here are actually a collection of 20 unique wooden houses that were collected from the different states of Malaysia, the oldest being 200 years old!

This is great for anybody who’s looking for a more traditional or rustic type stay, not to mention a treat for history buffs. Most of the villas also have an open-concept bathroom, which allows guests to enjoy the sun while still in the privacy of their own villas. If you’re a fan of merging the old with the new, then this resort is the place for you.

What I liked

  • Beautifully restored kampung houses were used
  • Good onsite parking and security
  • Very clean

What I didn’t like

  • Sometimes, loud airplanes can be heard flying nearby

Those who love quirky and modern will likely enjoy Dash Resort. The playful decorations will definitely catch your eye when you first step into the resort and your rooms, which are modern and comfortable. While it may not be as big as the rooms in other hotels, the sleek amenities definitely make up for it. I’d recommend upgrading if this is a concern for you.

The resort also has a great pool and a beach club vibe. This is definitely a great place to stay, especially for those who enjoy attending parties.

What I liked

  • Unlimited breakfast
  • Friendly staff
  • Great for party nights

What I didn’t like

  • Cleanliness can be bit hit or miss

(image from Temple Tree Resort Facebook)

Temple Tree Resort sits on grounds full of gorgeous greenery, offering 20 beautiful suites for guests. The suites are housed in antique buildings of Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian origin, making up this unique 8-villa hotel. Each has its own character, heritage, and history. The place is quite lovely, with plenty of green, brown, white, and golden accents that give it a distinct look.

The place is the perfect combination of modern and rustic, with wooden, porcelain, and marble structures. The rooms in the suites themselves are incredibly comfortable and luxurious — you’ll really feel like you’re on vacation while you’re here!

What I liked

  • Very accommodating staff
  • Unique style and atmosphere (colonial ambiance)
  • Delicious food with original concepts

What I didn’t like

  • Not everybody may like a rustic-style room

Best 5 Star Hotels and Resorts in Langkawi

(image from The Datai Langkawi Facebook)

Datai Bay is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and The Datai definitely does it justice as one of the five-start hotels in the area. There are 124 rooms available for guests. Some even come with their own plunge pools, depending on what you book. The hotel also comes with a main pool, a secondary pool, a spa, and four restaurants.

You’ll enjoy the lush green surroundings and dark wood architecture of the hotel. The rooms are tastefully decorated with clean, white walls and sheets, and the bathrooms are large and luxe. This is a place to be if you want to feel pampered, for sure!

(image from Ambong-Ambong Rainforest Retreat Facebook)

This tranquil sanctuary is nestled deep in the Langkawi forest, and it is nothing short of spectacular. My first impression of this place was that it was like a very posh treehouse surrounded by greens. There are swimming pools, gorgeous world-class amenities, and plenty of space.

Depending on the unit you get, the cream-colored rooms have four-poster beds with beautiful white curtains that are a dream to wake up to while on vacation. This place is great because it provides visitors with a scene different from the usual beach resorts in Langkawi. It’s a breath of fresh air — quite literally!

What I liked

  • Rooms are spacious and clean
  • The hospitality offered was unparalleled
  • Breathtaking views

What I didn’t like

  • A little far from restaurants
  • The uphill stroll can be quite tiring

(image from Tanjung Rhu Resort Facebook)

Found in the northeastern part of Langkawi is Tanjung Rhu Resort, a pleasant establishment that is perfect for romantic getaways. This is a more traditional beachfront resort with excellent amenities. The resort’s strategic location gives guests the opportunity to be away from crowds and still be within reach of the popular locations in Langkawi town.

The rooms are excellent and spacious with comfortable beds and warm, ambient lighting. The decor is also quite tasteful and understated, and these small details can make a difference in your stay.

What I liked

  • Very private location
  • Peaceful and quiet
  • Good variety for breakfast

What I didn’t like

  • The location may be too far away for some people
  • The roadside can be a bit dark

(image from Ritz Carlton Langkawi Facebook)

The Ritz-Carlton is a household name in the world of hotels, and it offers just the right balance of luxury and tropical ambiance. You can expect top-tier amenities such as their infinity pool and spa, and an incredible beachfront location at Pantai Kok.

The rooms themselves are beautifully decorated with high ceilings and plenty of windows to let in natural light. They’re spacious, of course, with a classic touch. The only thing worth noting is that some parts of the hotel may look a little outdated, but it is still an excellent option nevertheless.

What I liked

  • Attention to detail for guests (handwritten notes and complimentary desserts)
  • Rooms are luxe, spacious, and clean
  • Delicious hotel breakfast

What I didn’t like

  • Room fixtures and parts of the hotel looked a little outdated

(image from Four season Langkawi Facebook)

Another well-known name in the hospitality industry is the Four Seasons. You won’t be disappointed with this beachfront getaway. There are two sections that are suitable for families and couples, respectively. The Moroccan-inspired interiors are also something to marvel at.

You can choose from any of the 91 villas and pavilions. The rooms are decorated with tasteful blues and whites that look beautiful against the dark wooden structures and stone walls. Of course, you can expect five-star amenities during your stay here.

It’s hard to get a better bang for your buck than this super clean flashpacker hostel in a 5-minutes walk from the beach and a 2-minutes walk from the bars and cafes along Pantai Tengah.
